Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Algerian passport holders need a visa to enter Romania. Apply online through the Romania eVisa portal at evisa.mae.ro. Processing takes up to 30 days — submit your application at least 3 weeks before your flight.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Romania. Romania does not enforce the 6-month validity rule for Algerian passports — just make sure it doesn't expire while you're there.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of exit from Schengen zone
Border officers at Bucharest Otopeni and other Romanian airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready showing your exit from the Schengen area within your visa's validity.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask for a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Romania. Keep a printed booking confirmation or a signed invitation letter in your carry-on.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Officers can request evidence you have enough money for your trip. Carry bank statements or a credit card showing at least €50 per day of your planned stay.Recommended
Visa required — no exceptions
Algerian passport holders cannot enter Romania without a visa. There is no visa-on-arrival or eTA. Apply well in advance.
Schengen visa holders can enter
If you already have a valid Schengen visa or residence permit, you can enter Romania without a separate Romanian visa. This is a common workaround for short trips.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the visa online
Go to the Romanian eVisa portal (evisa.mae.ro/en). Fill in the form, upload your passport scan and a passport-sized photo, and pay the fee. Processing takes 10–15 business days, sometimes longer.
2
Wait for approval
You'll receive an email when your visa is approved. Print the approval document — you'll need it at the airport and at Romanian border control.
3
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, gather: passport, visa approval printout, return ticket, hotel booking, and insurance. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at Bucharest or other Romanian airport
At passport control, hand over your passport and visa approval. The officer may ask about your trip, accommodation, and return plans. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel and walk through customs. Use the green channel if you have nothing to declare.
