Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Costa Rica. Airlines check this at check-in, and immigration officers at San José (SJO) will deny boarding if it expires before you leave.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Costa Rica
Immigration at SJO routinely asks for a return or onward ticket before they stamp you in. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Costa Rica — they won't let you through without it.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital hotel confirmation for at least the first few nights. If you're staying with a friend, have their address and phone number written down — officers sometimes ask where you're sleeping.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card ready. Immigration rarely asks for it, but if they do, they want to see you have enough cash or credit to cover your trip — roughly $100 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Costa Rican immigration counts 6 months from your arrival date, not your departure. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be turned away at the airport.
Check your entry stamp before leaving the counter
The officer writes the number of days allowed. Make sure it's correct (usually 90 or 180). If you notice an error, ask them to fix it immediately — it's much harder to sort out later.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport
You'll land at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José or Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia. Follow signs to 'Migración' for passport control.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Have them ready on your phone or printed.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the number of days allowed (usually 90, but up to 180). Check the stamp before walking away.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to go once you clear customs.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 180-day visa-free stay is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave Costa Rica and re-enter, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits.
No, if you're transiting through a Costa Rican airport and don't leave the international transit area, you don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport, you'll need to meet the same entry requirements.
You'll be denied entry at the border. Costa Rica strictly enforces the 6-month passport validity rule. Renew your passport before traveling.
Yes, an onward ticket to any destination outside Costa Rica works. It doesn't have to be a return flight — just proof you're leaving.
No, it's not officially required for entry. But healthcare in Costa Rica is expensive — a hospital stay can cost hundreds of dollars per day. Most travellers get insurance anyway.
The visa-free entry is for tourism only. Working remotely for a foreign employer is a grey area — technically you're not supposed to work, but many digital nomads do it. For legal work, you'd need a proper visa.
Immigration may deny you entry. Airlines also check for onward tickets before boarding. Book a refundable ticket or one with free cancellation to be safe.
