Estonian passport holders can visit the United Kingdom for tourism, business, or family visits without a visa for up to 180 days per visit. This visa-free arrangement has been in place since 2025 and applies to short stays. You won't need to apply for anything before you travel, but you must meet entry requirements at the border.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ETA application
Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
Since January 8, 2025, Estonian passport holders need an ETA before flying to the UK. Apply at gov.uk/apply-uk-visa — the £10 fee covers multiple trips for up to 2 years. Approval usually comes within minutes, but apply at least 48 hours before departure.Apply for ETARequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Estonian passport needs to be valid for the whole time you're in the UK. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required, but airlines sometimes ask for 6 months — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Border officers routinely ask for proof you're leaving within 180 days. Have a return flight or onward ticket to a non-UK destination ready — a bus or ferry booking also works.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a return ticket. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a friend with their address is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can ask for bank statements or cash to confirm you have enough for your stay. No fixed amount is published, but having £50–100 per day in accessible funds is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Border interview is normal
Don't be surprised if the border officer asks detailed questions about your plans. They're checking you're a genuine visitor. Have your return ticket and accommodation details ready. Answer briefly and honestly — don't volunteer extra information.
No visa needed, but don't skip preparation
Visa-free doesn't mean guaranteed entry. You still need a valid passport, return ticket, and accommodation. Without these, you risk being refused at the border. Pack them in your carry-on, not checked luggage.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at UK border
At any UK airport or port, join the 'All Other Passports' queue (not the UK/EU eGates). Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The border officer will ask your purpose, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer honestly and briefly.
2
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (usually 180 days). Check the stamp before leaving the desk. If the date is wrong, ask for a correction immediately.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After the border check, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You're now free to enter the UK.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and family visits only. You cannot take up employment, work as a freelancer, or do paid work. If you want to work, you need a work visa (e.g., Skilled Worker visa).
Up to 180 days per visit. There's no limit on the number of visits, but if you spend too much time in the UK (e.g., 6 months in, 1 month out, then another 6 months), border officers may suspect you're living there and refuse entry.
No. The visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a visa before you travel (e.g., a Standard Visitor visa for up to 6 months, or a longer-term visa). Overstaying can lead to a ban.
No. Estonian passport holders are not required to register with the police when entering the UK as a visitor. This only applies to certain nationalities and visa categories.
You must leave before your passport expires. The UK border allows entry only if your passport is valid for the entire stay. If your passport expires mid-trip, you'll need to get an emergency travel document from the Estonian embassy in London to leave.
No. Estonian passports are not eligible for the UK eGates (which are for UK, EU, and a few other nationalities). You must use the manned 'All Other Passports' queue. Expect a short interview at the desk.
If refused, you'll be given a written notice explaining why. You can appeal or reapply, but it's best to fix the issue (e.g., missing return ticket, insufficient funds) and try again. In most cases, having all documents ready prevents refusal.
