Estonian passport holders can enter Latvia without a visa for short stays. As of 2026, you can travel freely within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Estonian passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Latvia. As an EU citizen, you can enter with a passport or national ID card — no minimum validity period beyond your stay is required.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration at Riga Airport may ask for proof that you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. A return ticket to Estonia or onward flight to a non-Schengen country works. Budget airlines check this at check-in too.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host in Latvia ready. Border officers rarely ask EU citizens for it, but having it printed or on your phone avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a bank statement or enough cash for your stay — around €50 per day is a safe benchmark. Latvia rarely checks funds for EU travellers, but it's one less thing to worry about if asked.Recommended
Schengen 90/180 day rule
Your 90-day allowance applies to the entire Schengen Area, not just Latvia. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, or any other Schengen country, that counts toward your total. Use the EU's Schengen calculator to track your days.
Estonia and Latvia are both Schengen
Since both countries are in the Schengen Area, there are no border checks between them. You can drive, bus, or fly between Tallinn and Riga without showing your passport. But keep it with you — police may ask for ID.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Riga Airport or border crossing
You'll go through Schengen entry. At Riga Airport (RIX), join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport ready and any supporting documents (return ticket, accommodation) easily accessible.
2
Present your passport to the border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or accommodation confirmation.
3
Get your passport stamped
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it for exit checks.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags), then through customs. There are no further immigration checks for Schengen arrivals.
