Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Mongolia. Airlines at Tallinn Airport will check this before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mongolia
Immigration officers at Chinggis Khaan International Airport routinely ask for a printed or digital onward ticket. Have a confirmed flight out of Mongolia within 30 days of arrival.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Mongolia. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays at the border.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least 500,000 MNT (~$150 USD) per day of your stay. Officers almost never check this for visa-free travellers, but it's good to have.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you arrive in Mongolia, not the day you leave. If it expires sooner, you'll be turned away.
No visa needed for stays up to 30 days
Estonian passport holders can enter Mongolia visa-free for tourism or business for up to 30 days. Just have your passport and return ticket ready.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Ulaanbaatar airport or land border
Most travellers fly into Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN) in Ulaanbaatar. If coming overland from Russia or China, you'll go through a land border checkpoint. The process is similar at all entry points.
2
Queue at immigration
Join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp you in, and you're done — no visa needed.
3
Show your return ticket if asked
The officer may ask for proof of onward travel. Show the screenshot on your phone or a printed copy. They rarely ask for accommodation or insurance, but it's good to have them accessible.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel and walk through customs. There's usually nothing to declare unless you're carrying large amounts of cash or restricted goods.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave Mongolia before 30 days are up. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to apply for a visa in advance from an embassy or consulate.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or entry by Mongolian immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. The 6 months are counted from your entry date, not your departure.
If you're transiting and staying airside (not passing through immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you leave the airport, even for a few hours, you'll need to meet the visa-free entry requirements — passport validity, return ticket, etc.
Your passport (valid 6+ months) and a return or onward ticket. Accommodation proof and insurance are not mandatory but smart to have. The officer may ask for your ticket, but rarely for the others.
Yes, you can enter via land borders, for example from Russia at Kyakhta/Altanbulag or from China at Erlian/Zamyn-Üüd. The same visa-free rules apply — passport validity and return ticket. Check border opening hours and any local restrictions before you go.
It's not a legal requirement for entry, but it's strongly recommended. Medical care in Mongolia can be expensive, and evacuation to another country costs thousands. A basic travel insurance policy covers that.
The local currency is the Mongolian Tögrög (MNT). ATMs are available in Ulaanbaatar and major towns, but less common in rural areas. Bring some cash in USD or EUR to exchange — you'll get better rates than at the airport. Credit cards are accepted in hotels and some restaurants in the capital.
