Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in El Salvador. El Salvador does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may enforce their own rules — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from El Salvador
Immigration officers at San Salvador International Airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Immigration may ask to see bank statements or cash to confirm you have enough money for your trip. Have at least $500 USD or equivalent available, either in cash or on a card.Recommended
6-month passport validity is strictly enforced
Immigration officers check your passport's expiry date against your entry date. If it's less than 6 months away, you'll be refused boarding by the airline and denied entry at the border. Renew early.
Keep a copy of your return ticket
Airlines sometimes ask to see your onward ticket before letting you board. Save a screenshot or have the booking confirmation email handy. It's also the first thing immigration asks for.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at San Salvador International Airport (SAL)
After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). The queue can take 20–60 minutes depending on flight arrivals. Have your passport and return ticket ready.
2
Present your documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask how long you plan to stay and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date and the 180-day limit.
3
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, go to baggage claim, then customs. There's a red/green channel system — if you have nothing to declare, go through the green channel. Random checks happen.
