Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Benin. Airlines check this before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Benin
Immigration officers at Cotonou Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host. Officers may ask for it during entry questioning.Recommended
Proof of funds
Evidence of sufficient money for your stay
Have bank statements or cash showing you can cover your expenses. No fixed amount is published, but around $100 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Overstay = fines + possible ban
Overstaying even a day can result in a fine of ~$10/day and a ban from re-entering Benin. Set a reminder to leave before day 90.
No visa needed, but be prepared
Visa-free doesn't mean no questions. Immigration officers routinely ask for return tickets and proof of accommodation. Have them ready.
Malaria is a real risk
Malaria is present year-round throughout Benin. Prophylaxis (e.g., atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline) is strongly recommended. Use insect repellent and sleep under mosquito nets.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (must cover your entire stay), print or save your return ticket, hotel booking, and bank statements. Also arrange travel insurance and a local SIM if you want.
2
Arrive at Cotonou Airport (COO)
Most flights land at Cadjehoun Airport in Cotonou. After deplaning, follow signs to immigration. There are usually two queues: one for Beninese citizens and one for foreigners. Join the foreigners queue.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer will likely ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and your return date. Answer clearly and briefly. They may ask to see your return ticket and hotel booking.
4
Receive entry stamp
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport with a visa-free entry valid for up to 90 days. No fee is charged. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when leaving.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. Customs checks are usually light — just walk through unless you have something to declare.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must leave Benin (e.g., to a neighboring country) and re-enter. Alternatively, apply for a long-stay visa at a Benin embassy before travel.
Overstay penalties are not officially published, but you'll likely be fined around $10 USD per day. More importantly, overstaying can lead to a ban from re-entering Benin. Avoid it.
Yellow fever vaccination is required for travellers arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission. Egypt is not endemic, but if you transit through an endemic country (e.g., Nigeria), you may need proof. It's safest to get the vaccine anyway — it's a single shot, lasts a lifetime.
No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits only. To work, you need a work permit and residence card, which requires employer sponsorship. The estimated cost is ~$300 USD for a one-year permit.
Go to your embassy (Egyptian embassy in Cotonou) to get an emergency travel document. Then visit the Direction Générale de la Police Nationale – Service Immigration in Cotonou to report the loss and get an exit permit. Keep a photocopy of your passport separately.
Benin is generally safe for tourists, but petty crime (pickpocketing, bag snatching) occurs in markets and busy areas. Avoid walking alone at night in cities. Malaria is widespread — take prophylaxis and use mosquito repellent.
Yes, there are land borders with Nigeria (e.g., Seme border) and Togo (e.g., Hilacondji). The same visa-free rules apply. Expect longer queues and more scrutiny at land borders — have all documents ready.
