Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a Kazakhstan eVisa at the official eVisa portal. Processing takes 5-10 business days. Print the approval letter and carry it with your passport to the border.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Kazakhstan. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by Kazakh law, but airlines may enforce 6 months — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers at Almaty and Nur-Sultan airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing your departure from Kazakhstan.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation
Carry a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Kazakhstan. Officers may ask for it at passport control, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card ready. The official threshold is roughly 50,000 KZT per day, but officers rarely ask for exact amounts — just evidence you have money.Recommended
eVisa is single-entry only
The eVisa allows one entry. If you leave Kazakhstan (even to a neighboring country), you'll need a new visa to return.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for 6 months from the day you land in Kazakhstan, not from your departure date. Double-check before you apply.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa online
Go to evisa.e-gov.kz, fill in your details, upload a passport-style photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around $20-30 USD) with a credit card. Processing takes 3-5 business days.
2
Receive and print eVisa
You'll get the eVisa by email as a PDF. Print a copy and save it on your phone. The border officer will scan the QR code at the airport.
3
Arrive at Kazakh airport
At Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport (NQZ) in Astana or Almaty International Airport (ALA), go to the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport, eVisa printout, and return ticket. They'll stamp you in.
4
Show accommodation and insurance if asked
Immigration may ask for your hotel booking or insurance. Have them ready on your phone or printed. Most of the time they just stamp and wave you through.
