Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Bulgaria requires your passport to be valid for the entire period you plan to stay. No minimum validity beyond departure is needed. Airlines may still check for 6 months validity — carry your return ticket to show you leave on time.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready. A bus or train ticket to another Schengen country also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from a friend with their address and phone number. A simple booking.com PDF works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers rarely ask, but carry a bank statement or credit card showing at least €50 per day of stay. Cash is not required — a card with a visible balance is enough.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry, not departure
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you land in Bulgaria. If it expires sooner, renew before you travel — even if you plan to leave before it expires.
Bulgaria is not yet in the Schengen area
Bulgaria is an EU member but not part of the Schengen zone. Your 90-day visa-free stay in Bulgaria is separate from the Schengen 90/180 rule. However, time spent in Bulgaria counts toward the overall 90-day limit for non-Schengen EU countries (Romania, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland). Keep track of all your EU stays.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport is valid for 6+ months from entry. Print or save digital copies of your return ticket, first night accommodation, and travel insurance. Keep them in a separate folder on your phone.
2
Arrive at Sofia Airport or border crossing
At Sofia Airport (SOF), follow signs to 'EU/EEA/CH Passports' or 'All Passports' — Spanish passports use the EU lane. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer may ask for your return ticket or accommodation proof. Answer clearly: 'Tourism' or 'Business'.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible before leaving the counter. If you overstay, you risk fines or a ban.
4
Exit Bulgaria
When leaving, present your passport at the border. No exit stamp is given for EU citizens, but keep your boarding pass as proof of departure.

Frequently asked questions

No, Spanish passport holders do not need a visa for short stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to tourism, business, or family visits.
You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The count starts from your first entry. If you stay 90 days, you must leave for 90 days before returning.
No, the 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. For longer stays (e.g., work, study, or family reunification), you need to apply for a long-stay visa or residence permit at the Bulgarian embassy in Spain before you travel.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date into Bulgaria. If it expires sooner, renew it before you travel. Border officers may deny entry otherwise.
Yes, you still need proof of onward travel — a bus or train ticket works. Immigration wants to see you'll leave Bulgaria before your 90 days are up.
Not officially for short stays, but it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Bulgaria can be high, and your Spanish health card (EHIC) may not cover all expenses. A basic policy costs around €20–€50 for a week.
Overstaying can result in a fine (typically €100–€500), a ban from entering Bulgaria or the Schengen area for up to 5 years, and deportation. Always track your days carefully.
