Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply for Bhutan e-Permit
Apply for your Bhutan e-Permit at bhutan.travel/e-permit at least 5 working days before travel. The permit costs $40 USD per person per day (minimum $200 USD/day package) and covers your visa, accommodation, and guide. You'll need a passport scan, passport photo, and flight itinerary to apply.Apply for e-PermitRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Bhutan
Your Spanish passport needs at least 6 months of validity beyond the day you leave Bhutan. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bhutan
Immigration at Paro Airport will ask for a confirmed onward ticket showing you leave Bhutan within your e-Permit validity. A flight booking to any international destination works — they don't require a specific country.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking matching your e-Permit itinerary
Your e-Permit application already includes your hotel bookings, so you don't need separate proof. Just have your e-Permit confirmation ready — it lists every night's accommodation.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or credit card showing sufficient funds
Immigration rarely asks for proof of funds, but your e-Permit package already covers all costs (hotel, guide, meals, transport). Carry a credit card for incidentals — ATMs are scarce outside Thimphu.Recommended
eVisa is mandatory — no exceptions
You cannot get a visa on arrival in Bhutan. Airlines will deny boarding without an approved eVisa. Apply at least 7 days before your flight.
Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)
All tourists pay $100 USD per night as an SDF. This is included in most tour packages. If you're booking independently, factor this into your budget — it adds up fast.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Bhutan eVisa portal and fill out the application. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, and accommodation info. Pay the visa fee (around $40 USD) and any applicable tourism levy. Processing usually takes 3–5 working days.
2
Receive your eVisa approval
Once approved, you'll get a PDF via email. Print a copy and also save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in for your flight to Bhutan and again at immigration in Paro.
3
Arrive at Paro International Airport
After landing, follow signs to immigration. Have your passport, eVisa approval, and return ticket ready. The officer will check your documents, take a photo, and stamp you in. The whole process usually takes 10–15 minutes.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. There's a customs checkpoint on the way out — declare any expensive items or restricted goods. Then you're free to meet your driver or guide.
