Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Costa Rica. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required, but airlines sometimes enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Costa Rica
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Costa Rica ready — they check this at the counter before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Costa Rica doesn't publish a fixed amount, but having $100–$200 USD per day of your stay in cash or on a card statement is a safe benchmark. I've seen officers ask for a bank statement or credit card at the desk.Recommended
No visa needed — just show up
Spanish passport holders can enter Costa Rica visa-free for up to 180 days. No application, no fee, no pre-approval. Just ensure your passport is valid for 6+ months and you have a return ticket.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at San José Airport (SJO) or Liberia (LIR)
After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). Join the foreigners queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready.
2
Present documents to immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask how long you're staying and where. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date and the number of days granted (usually 90 or 180).
3
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, go to baggage claim. Walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no goods to declare, or the red channel if you do. Customs officers may randomly stop you for a bag check.
