Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid only for the length of your stay in Lesotho — the 6-month rule does not apply here. Airlines may still check for at least 3 months validity, so verify with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Lesotho
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at Maseru's Moshoeshoe I International Airport. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight ready — they will check it before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host. While not always checked, having it ready avoids delays if the officer asks where you are staying.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or cash equivalent to roughly 1,000 ZAR (about €50) per day of your stay. Immigration may ask to see it if you look under-resourced or have no clear itinerary.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Lesotho. If it's even a day short, you'll be refused boarding by the airline and turned away at immigration. Check your expiry date before you book.
No visa on arrival for Spanish passport holders
You don't need a visa at all for stays up to 14 days — just walk up to the immigration counter with your passport and onward ticket. No forms to fill, no fees to pay.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Moshoeshoe I International Airport (MSU)
Most visitors fly into Maseru. After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' — it's a small terminal, so you can't miss it. Join the queue for foreign passports.
2
Present your documents at the immigration counter
Hand over your passport (with at least 6 months validity and 1 blank page), your return/onward ticket (printed or on your phone), and optionally your accommodation booking. The officer will check your details and stamp you in.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (14 days). Check the stamp before walking away — make sure the dates are correct. You're now free to enter Lesotho.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 14-day visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a visa at a Lesotho embassy before you travel, or leave and re-enter to reset the clock (but re-entry is at the discretion of immigration).
You'll need to apply for a visa in advance at the Lesotho High Commission in Madrid or another embassy. There's no online visa option for longer stays. Plan ahead — processing can take a couple of weeks.
Only if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (like parts of Africa or South America). If you're flying directly from Spain, no. But if you've been in a risk zone recently, bring your yellow fever certificate.
Yes. The main land border crossings are Maseru Bridge (from Ladybrand, South Africa) and Ficksburg Bridge. The same visa-free rules apply — just show your passport and onward ticket. Expect queues on weekends and holidays.
Lesotho uses the Lesotho loti (LSL), which is pegged 1:1 to the South African rand (ZAR). South African rand is widely accepted everywhere. Bring some cash in rand — ATMs exist in Maseru but can be unreliable. Cards are accepted at hotels and larger shops.
Lesotho is generally safe for tourists, but petty crime like bag snatching happens in Maseru. Avoid walking alone at night in the city. The countryside is very safe. Always keep your passport and valuables in your hotel safe.
If you're transiting (staying airside and not passing immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport, even for a few hours, the 14-day visa-free rule applies.
