Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Spanish passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Latvia. Latvia does not enforce the 6-month validity rule for EU nationals — any valid passport works. Carry your national ID card as a backup; border officers accept it for EU travel.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration at Riga Airport checks for a return or onward ticket out of the Schengen zone. Since Latvia is part of Schengen, your 90-day clock runs across all 29 countries — a flight to London or Dubai resets it. Budget airlines like Ryanair and airBaltic verify this at check-in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from a friend with their address ready. Border officers at Riga Airport ask for it about half the time. If staying with a friend, a simple invitation letter with their Latvian ID number works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €100 per day of your stay. Latvia rarely asks EU nationals for proof of funds, but if you arrive without a return ticket or accommodation, expect the question.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all 27 Schengen countries. If you've already spent time in France or Germany earlier in the year, that time counts toward your 90-day limit. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Riga Airport or border crossing
Most travellers fly into Riga International Airport (RIX). Join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport and any supporting documents ready.
2
Present your passport to the border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer will check your identity and may ask about the purpose and length of your stay. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. This stamp records the start of your 90-day Schengen stay. Check the stamp before leaving the counter.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim if you checked bags, then walk through customs. No further formalities for Spanish citizens.
