Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Mauritius. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mauritius
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at passport control. Without one, you risk being refused entry and sent back on the next flight.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a printed or digital hotel reservation, or a letter of invitation from your host in Mauritius. Officers occasionally ask for this during peak travel periods.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. Immigration may ask for this if you look like you might work or overstay.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity at check-in. If you have less than 6 months left, you won't be allowed to board. Double-check before you leave.
No visa, but keep documents handy
Immigration rarely asks for proof of accommodation or return ticket, but they can. Having a screenshot on your phone avoids delays.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave Spain, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), print or save your return ticket and first night's accommodation confirmation. Get travel insurance and a local eSIM if you want.
2
Arrive at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration'. The queue moves quickly. Have your passport and return ticket ready. You'll be asked your purpose of visit and where you're staying.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The immigration officer will stamp your passport with a visitor's permit valid for up to 90 days. No fee, no forms to fill. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when you leave.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel, then proceed through customs. Green channel if you have nothing to declare, red channel if you have goods over the duty-free limit.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable for Spanish passport holders. You must leave before day 90. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
If you're staying airside and leaving within 24 hours, no visa is needed. But you must have a confirmed onward ticket and your passport must be valid for 6+ months.
You will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Mauritian immigration. Renew your passport before you travel.
No. There is no online arrival declaration for Mauritius. You'll fill a simple paper form on the plane or at the airport.
The visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, and family visits. If you plan to work remotely for a foreign employer, it's technically not allowed, but enforcement is rare. For long-term remote work, consider the Mauritius Premium Visa (valid for 1 year).
No mandatory vaccinations for travellers from Spain. However, check routine vaccines (MMR, DTP) and consider hepatitis A and typhoid if you're eating street food or staying in rural areas.
The local currency is the Mauritian Rupee (MUR). Euros and US dollars are widely accepted at hotels and larger shops, but you'll get better rates at exchange bureaus. ATMs are common in Port Louis and tourist areas.
