Spanish passport holders need a visa to enter Turkmenistan. There is no visa-on-arrival or eVisa option for Spanish citizens, so you must apply through a Turkmen embassy or consulate before you travel. Plan well ahead — the process involves paperwork and can take several weeks.

No visa, no entry — no exceptions
Spanish citizens cannot get a visa on arrival or an eVisa. If you arrive at Ashgabat International Airport without a valid visa sticker in your passport, you will be denied entry and sent back. There is no negotiation at the border.
Start with the Letter of Invitation
The LOI is the hardest part. Contact a reputable tour operator or hotel in Turkmenistan well in advance — they handle the LOI process. Without an approved LOI, the embassy will not accept your visa application.
No embassy in Spain
You'll likely need to travel to Paris (or another city with a Turkmen embassy) to submit your application in person. Factor in travel time and embassy appointment availability.

What happens at the border

1
Obtain a Letter of Invitation
Contact a hotel, tour agency, or business partner in Turkmenistan. They will submit your details to the State Migration Service to get an approved LOI. This can take 2–4 weeks. You'll receive a copy (often by email) to include with your visa application.
2
Prepare your application documents
Gather your passport (valid 6+ months), the LOI, completed application form, photos, flight/hotel bookings, and fee. Make copies of everything.
3
Submit your application at the embassy
Book an appointment at the Turkmen embassy (e.g., in Paris or Moscow — there is no embassy in Madrid, so you may need to use the embassy in Paris or the consulate in another country). Submit your documents in person or by mail if the embassy allows. Pay the fee.
4
Wait for processing
Processing typically takes 5–10 working days, but can be longer. The embassy may contact you for additional information. Check the embassy's website for current processing times.
5
Collect your visa and travel
Once approved, your passport will be returned with the visa sticker. Check the dates and details on the visa. At Ashgabat International Airport, present your passport and visa at immigration. Have your LOI and hotel confirmation ready in case they ask.
