Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Ukraine. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Ukrainian law, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ukraine
Border officers at Boryspil and Lviv airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave within 90 days. Airlines also check this at check-in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and phone number is enough. Have it accessible on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can request evidence of sufficient funds. Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $50 per day of your stay. Most travellers never get asked, but it's safer to have it.Recommended
6-month passport validity is strictly enforced
Ukrainian border officers count 6 months from the day you enter. If your passport expires before that mark, you will be denied entry. Renew your passport if it's close to expiry.
Keep digital copies of all documents
Save photos of your passport, return ticket, and accommodation booking on your phone and in cloud storage. If you lose your physical documents, these copies can help at the embassy or with local authorities.
Visa-free entry is straightforward
Spanish passport holders have enjoyed visa-free access to Ukraine since 2017. The process at border control is usually quick — just have your passport and return ticket ready. No visa application, no fees, no interviews.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before travel, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, and accommodation booking. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups if possible.
2
Arrive at Ukrainian border control
At any Ukrainian airport (Kyiv Boryspil, Lviv, Odesa) or land border crossing, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim (if flying) and then customs. Unless you're carrying large sums of cash or restricted goods, you'll walk straight through the green channel.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is limited to 90 days within any 180-day period. To stay longer, apply for a temporary residence permit (e.g., for work, study, or family reunification) at the State Migration Service in Ukraine before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and a ban on re-entry.
No. Spanish citizens transiting through Ukraine (e.g., flying from Spain to Asia with a layover in Kyiv) do not need a visa as long as you stay in the international transit area and don't pass through passport control. If you need to leave the airport, you'll need to meet the standard visa-free entry requirements.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling. Exceptions for emergency travel are rare; check with the Ukrainian embassy.
No, it's not a legal requirement for visa-free entry. However, it's strongly recommended because medical costs in Ukraine can be high. Some airlines may ask for proof of insurance at check-in, so it's safer to have it.
Yes. Spanish passport holders can enter Ukraine by land from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, or Moldova at any official border crossing. The same visa-free rules apply. Expect longer queues at busy crossings, especially during holidays.
Report the loss immediately to the local police and get a police report. Then contact the Spanish Embassy in Kyiv (or the nearest consulate) to apply for an emergency travel document. You'll need a passport photo and the police report. The embassy can issue a temporary passport valid for your return to Spain.
For stays under 90 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer than 90 days (with a residence permit), you must register with the State Migration Service within 30 days of arrival. Hotels usually handle registration for their guests automatically.
