Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Ethiopian passport holders need an eVisa to enter Ecuador. Apply at the Ecuador Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa portal. Processing takes a few business days — submit at least a week before your flight.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for intended stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Ecuador. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by Ecuadorian law, but airlines may enforce 6 months — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers at Quito and Guayaquil routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave Ecuador within your allowed stay.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host letter
Carry a hotel reservation or an invitation letter from your host. Immigration may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card ready. Ecuador doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but officers expect to see enough for your stay — roughly $50–$100 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
eVisa is mandatory — no visa on arrival
Ethiopian passport holders cannot get a visa at the airport in Ecuador. You must have an approved eVisa before you board your flight. Airlines check this at check-in.
Keep digital copies of everything
Save your eVisa PDF, flight tickets, and accommodation confirmations on your phone. Immigration officers may ask to see them, and having them handy speeds things up.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Ecuador eVisa portal. Fill in your personal details, upload a digital passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee with a credit card. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days.
2
Receive and print your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get a PDF via email. Print a copy and also save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and at immigration.
3
Prepare your documents for departure
Before heading to the airport, gather: your printed eVisa, passport (6+ months validity), return/onward ticket, first night accommodation booking, and travel insurance if you have it. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at Ecuador immigration
At Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE) airport, follow signs to 'Extranjeros' (Foreigners). Hand over your passport and eVisa. The officer will stamp you in. They may ask to see your return ticket and accommodation — have them ready.
