Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a Kazakhstan eVisa at evisa.e-gov.kz. Processing takes 3–5 business days. Single-entry eVisas cost $20 USD, multiple-entry $60 USD. Print the approval email and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your Ethiopian passport needs at least two blank pages for entry stamps. Kazakhstan does not enforce a 6-month validity rule — your passport just needs to be valid for the duration of your stay.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers at Almaty and Nur-Sultan airports routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a notarized invitation from your host in Kazakhstan. Officers rarely check it, but having it avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Have a bank statement from the last 3 months showing at least $500 USD equivalent, or carry cash in USD/EUR. Officers ask for it only if you look underfunded.Recommended
eVisa is not extendable
The eVisa cannot be extended. Plan your trip so you leave before it expires. If you need more time, apply for a different visa type before you travel.
Keep digital and paper copies
Save your eVisa, passport, and hotel booking as PDFs on your phone, and also carry printed copies. Phone batteries die, and not all officials accept digital-only documents.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa online
Go to https://evisa.e-gov.kz/en/, fill in your details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page, and pay the fee. Processing takes 2–5 business days. You'll receive the eVisa by email.
2
Print or save eVisa
Once approved, print a copy of the eVisa and also save a PDF on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and upon arrival in Kazakhstan.
3
Prepare documents for travel
Gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, hotel booking, and travel insurance. Keep digital copies on your phone and paper backups in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at Kazakh immigration
At the airport (e.g., Almaty or Nur-Sultan), join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Present your passport, eVisa, and return ticket. The officer may ask your hotel address — have it ready. They'll stamp your passport with an entry stamp.
5
Exit immigration and collect luggage
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. If you have goods over $10,000 or restricted items, use the red channel.
