Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Visa required
You need a visa before traveling to Ukraine. Apply at the Ukrainian embassy or consulate in your country of residence. The eVisa portal at evisa.gov.ua is available for certain nationalities — check if Ethiopia is eligible before applying.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Ukraine. Ukraine does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Ukrainian airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return ticket or a ticket to your next destination ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Hotel booking confirmations or an invitation letter from a host can speed up the immigration process. Officers may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
You may be asked to show you have enough money for your stay. Carry bank statements, a credit card, or cash equivalent to at least $50 USD per day of your trip.Recommended
eVisa only — no visa on arrival
Ukraine does not offer visa on arrival for Ethiopian passport holders. You must apply for an eVisa online before you travel. Do not show up at the airport without one — you will be denied boarding.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Ukraine, not from your departure date. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before applying for the eVisa.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your eVisa online
Go to evisa.gov.ua/en, fill out the application form, upload a digital passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around $20-35 depending on processing speed) and submit. Processing takes 3-9 business days.
2
Receive and print your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get a PDF via email. Print a copy and also save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and at Ukrainian border control.
3
Prepare your documents for travel
Before you leave, gather: passport (valid 6+ months), printed eVisa, return/onward ticket, first night accommodation booking, and travel insurance documents. Keep them in a single folder in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at a Ukrainian airport
You'll land at Boryspil (Kyiv), Lviv, or Odesa airport. Follow the 'Foreign Passports' signs to the immigration hall. Join the queue for non-EU/non-Ukrainian passports.
5
Present documents at border control
Hand over your passport, printed eVisa, and return ticket. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport — check the stamp shows the correct entry date.
