Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Costa Rica. Immigration officers rarely check for 6 months beyond departure, but airlines sometimes do — if your passport expires within 3 months of travel, check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Costa Rica
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. A bus ticket to Panama or a flight out within 180 days works — they just want to see you leave before your visa-free period ends.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready — a simple booking printout or email suffices.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Costa Rica can ask for evidence of financial means — roughly $100 per day of your stay is a safe benchmark. A bank statement or credit card with a decent limit usually satisfies the officer.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity at check-in. If you have less than 6 months left, you won't be allowed to board. Double-check your passport's expiry date before booking flights.
No visa needed, but have proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at San José Airport routinely ask for return tickets. Keep a printed or digital copy handy. If you don't have one, you may be questioned or refused entry.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at San José Airport
You'll land at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). Follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There are separate queues for Costa Rican citizens and foreigners. Join the 'Extranjeros' line.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 180-day entry.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. You'll walk through a green/red channel. If you have nothing to declare, go green. Then you're free to leave.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 180-day visa-free stay is not extendable. If you overstay, you'll face fines (around $100 per month) and potential entry bans. To stay longer, you'd need to leave and re-enter, but immigration may question frequent visits.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. Get your passport renewed before you travel. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced.
Only if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever (e.g., Brazil, Colombia, parts of Africa). If you're flying directly from the UK, no vaccine is required. Check the latest WHO list before you go.
Technically, no. The visa-free entry is for tourism or business meetings only. Remote work is a grey area — many digital nomads do it, but strictly speaking, you'd need a work permit. Costa Rica has a digital nomad visa (rentista) for longer stays.
You'll be fined approximately $100 per month (or part thereof) when you leave. Overstays can also lead to a 3-year entry ban if you exceed 30 days past your allowed stay. Always leave before your stamp expires.
No. Costa Rica does not require an online arrival declaration for British passport holders. Just show your passport at immigration.
Driving is possible with a UK driving licence (an International Driving Permit is not required but recommended). Roads can be rough, especially in rural areas. Stick to main highways and avoid driving at night.
