Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Estonia. Estonia does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but your airline might enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Tallinn Airport will ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. This is a standard check for all visa-free travellers entering the Schengen area.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host ready. Border officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, a printed booking confirmation or a digital copy on your phone works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €100 per day of your stay. Officers at Tallinn Airport may ask for proof of funds if you look like you might overstay or work illegally.Recommended
Schengen 90/180 rule applies
Your 90-day visa-free stay in Estonia counts toward the total 90 days you're allowed in the Schengen Area. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, or any other Schengen country, that time is deducted from your 90-day allowance.
Border checks are real
Estonia is part of the Schengen Area but maintains border checks at its land borders with Russia and Latvia. Always carry your passport, even if you're just crossing for a day trip.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Tallinn Airport or land border
Most travellers fly into Tallinn Airport (TLL). If arriving by land from Latvia or Russia, you'll go through a border checkpoint. Have your passport and any supporting documents ready.
2
Join the non-EU queue
At Tallinn Airport, follow signs for 'Non-EU Passports'. The queue can be short or up to 20 minutes depending on flight arrivals. EU citizens use a separate lane.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer will ask the purpose of your visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly. They may ask to see your return ticket or accommodation.
4
Get your entry stamp
If everything is fine, the officer stamps your passport with the entry date and the number of days allowed. Check the stamp before walking away. If it's wrong, ask for a correction immediately.

Frequently asked questions

No, not as a tourist. The 90-day limit applies to the entire Schengen Area. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a national visa (D-visa) or a residence permit from the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, or a ban from re-entering Schengen.
If you stay longer than 90 days, yes. For short visits under 90 days, no registration is needed. If you're staying for work or study, you'll need to register with the local government within a few days of arrival.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined (typically €100–300), deported, and banned from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 5 years. Always leave before your 90 days are up.
No. Border officers will refuse entry if your passport has less than 6 months validity from your entry date. Renew your passport before travelling.
No, if you're a UK passport holder and you stay airside (don't pass through immigration), you don't need a visa. If you need to leave the airport, you'll need to meet the standard visa-free entry requirements.
Yes, you can do remote work for a non-Estonian employer without a visa. But you cannot work for an Estonian company or do any work that benefits a local business without the correct work permit.
Report it immediately to the local police (dial 112) and get a police report. Then contact the British Embassy in Tallinn (on Wismari 6) to apply for an emergency travel document. You'll need the police report and a passport photo.
