Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Hong Kong. Hong Kong does not require 6 months of remaining validity beyond your departure date, but your airline may enforce this — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Immigration may ask for proof of onward travel
Hong Kong immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound booking ready — they check this even for visa-free visitors.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in Hong Kong. Immigration rarely asks for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to funds. Hong Kong does not publish a specific minimum amount, but officers may ask how you plan to cover your expenses.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Hong Kong immigration counts 6 months from your entry date, not your departure. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be refused boarding or entry. Check your passport now.
Keep your departure card safe
The small card you fill in on arrival has a tear-off portion you must hand back when you leave. Lose it and you'll have to fill in a replacement form at immigration — a minor hassle.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Hong Kong International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for Hong Kong residents and visitors. Join the 'Visitors' queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will check your passport, stamp it, and you're through. The whole process usually takes 10-20 minutes.
2
Complete the arrival card (if required)
You may be given a small white arrival card on the plane or at the immigration hall. Fill it in with your flight number, passport details, and accommodation address. Keep the departure portion safe — you'll need it when you leave.
3
Proceed to baggage claim and customs
After immigration, collect your luggage from the carousel. Then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no restricted items. If you're carrying cash over HKD 120,000 (about £12,000), use the red channel and declare it.
