Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your passport must be valid for at least the length of your stay in Mauritius. Airlines check this at check-in. If your passport expires within 6 months, carry a printed copy of your onward ticket to show you leave before expiry.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mauritius
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready. Overstaying the 90-day limit results in a fine of 500 MUR per day.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you are staying. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and contact number. A booking on your phone is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Immigration may ask for evidence of sufficient funds. Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least 3,000 MUR per day of stay. A recent statement on your phone works.Recommended
No visa needed, but don't skip the checklist
Even though you don't need a visa, immigration officers still check your passport validity, return ticket, and accommodation. Have these ready to avoid delays.
eSIMs save time at the airport
Instead of queuing for a local SIM at the airport, buy an Airalo eSIM online before you travel. It activates automatically when you land — you'll have data immediately.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration'. Join the queue for 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport, return ticket (printed or on phone), and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will stamp you in for up to 90 days. The process usually takes 10–20 minutes.
2
Baggage claim and customs
After immigration, collect your luggage from the carousel. Then proceed to customs — green channel if you have nothing to declare, red channel if you do. Customs checks are random but quick.
3
Exit the airport
Once through customs, you're free to leave. Taxis and car hire desks are just outside the arrivals hall. If you've arranged a transfer, your driver will be waiting in the arrivals area with a name board.
