UK passport holders don't need a visa for Puerto Rico — but you do need an approved ESTA before you fly. Puerto Rico is a US territory, so the same Visa Waiver Program rules apply as for the US mainland, and you get up to 90 days on arrival.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ESTA authorization (U.S. Visa Waiver Program)Puerto Rico follows U.S. entry rules, so UK travellers need an approved ESTA instead of a Puerto Rico-specific visa.
Required before boarding — no separate Puerto Rico visa exists
As a UK passport holder you travel to Puerto Rico (a U.S. territory) under the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, which requires an approved ESTA before departure. Apply online at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/ at least 72 hours before your flight; the fee is US$40.62 (US$4.00 processing + US$36.62 authorization) and approval is often instant but can officially take up to 72 hours. The ESTA is valid for up to 90 days per entry and covers the same CBP process you would face at San Juan (SJU) as on the U.S. mainland.Required
Passport validityU.S. CBP officers can refuse entry if your passport expires too soon after your trip.
At least 6 months beyond your planned departure
Your UK passport must remain valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of departure from Puerto Rico. Check the expiry date now and renew via HM Passport Office if it falls short — renewal can take several weeks.Required
Blank passport pageCBP needs a blank page to stamp your arrival record.
At least 1 blank page
Ensure your passport has at least 1 completely blank page available for the U.S. admission stamp. If your passport is nearly full, renew it before booking.Required
Return or onward ticketVisa Waiver Program travellers must be able to show they will leave the U.S. within 90 days.
Proof of departure from the U.S.
Carry a confirmed return or onward ticket showing you will leave Puerto Rico (or the U.S.) within your 90-day VWP stay. Airline check-in staff and CBP may ask to see it.Required
Proof of funds and accommodationOfficers occasionally ask travellers to demonstrate they can fund their trip.
For the duration of your stay
Be prepared to show evidence you can support yourself during your stay — bank statements, credit cards, and a hotel booking or host address. CBP may ask about your plans and finances on arrival at San Juan (SJU).Recommended
Arrival declarationYou do not need to file a Puerto Rico arrival form before you fly.
No paper form required
Puerto Rico uses the same CBP process as the U.S. mainland; there is no separate arrival declaration card to complete in advance. Answer CBP officer questions at primary inspection and declare any goods as required. Not required
Stay extensionVWP entries are capped at 90 days with no extension option.
Not available under the VWP
Your 90-day stay under the Visa Waiver Program cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you would have to leave the U.S. and re-enter, or apply for a different visa category before travelling. Not required
ESTA is not optional
UK passport holders can't board a flight to Puerto Rico without an approved ESTA. Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov — the only official site. Third-party sites charge more and don't speed anything up.
Puerto Rico = US rules
There's no separate Puerto Rico visa or entry process. Everything — ESTA, passport validity, 90-day limit — is identical to entering the US mainland. Don't buy any 'Puerto Rico visa' service you see online.
The 90-day clock starts on the mainland
If you connect through Miami, New York, or another US hub, you clear immigration there. Your 90 days begins at that point, not when you reach San Juan.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for ESTA before booking flights
Go to esta.cbp.dhs.gov — that's the only official site. Third-party sites charge extra and aren't faster. Fill in your passport details, trip information, and pay US$40.62. Most approvals come back in minutes, but don't leave it to the last minute: officially it can take up to 72 hours.
2
Check your passport expiry and blank pages
Confirm your passport is valid for at least 6 months past your return date and has at least one blank page. Renew now if not — a new passport means you need a fresh ESTA.
3
Fly to San Juan (SJU)
Most UK travellers connect through a US mainland hub (Miami, New York, Charlotte) before reaching San Juan. You'll clear US immigration at your first US point of entry, not in Puerto Rico. At San Juan, you arrive as a domestic passenger — no second immigration check.
4
At the CBP desk
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask where you're staying, how long you're staying, and whether you have onward travel. Answer directly. They'll stamp or electronically record your entry, usually for 90 days.
5
Keep your ESTA and entry record
Save your ESTA approval and note your admitted-until date. If you leave and re-enter the US during your trip, the clock doesn't reset — the 90 days is per entry under the Visa Waiver Program.

Frequently asked questions

No. UK passport holders travel visa-free under the US Visa Waiver Program, but you must have an approved ESTA before boarding. Puerto Rico follows US immigration rules exactly — there's no separate Puerto Rico visa.
US$40.62 total ($4.00 processing plus $36.62 authorization). Most applications are approved within minutes, but CBP says to allow up to 72 hours. Apply at least three days before your flight to be safe.
Up to 90 days per entry under the Visa Waiver Program. The clock starts when you clear US immigration at your first US port of entry, not when you land in San Juan. Extensions aren't available under the Visa Waiver Program — you'd need to leave and re-enter, and CBP decides whether to admit you again.
At your first US point of entry. If you fly London–Miami–San Juan, you clear CBP in Miami. San Juan arrival is then treated as a domestic flight. If you find a rare direct route from Europe, you'd clear CBP at San Juan instead.
Yes. An approved ESTA is valid for two years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Each entry gives you up to 90 days. If you get a new passport, you need a new ESTA.
You can't travel under the Visa Waiver Program. You'd need to apply for a B-2 visitor visa at a US embassy or consulate — in London, that's the US Embassy at Nine Elms. Allow several weeks for an interview appointment and processing.
Yes, you still need an ESTA or visa. Puerto Rico is US territory, so even a short connection through San Juan counts as entering the United States.
