British passport holders need a visa to enter Russia in 2026. You must apply for a visa before you travel — there are no visa-on-arrival or e-visa options for UK citizens. Plan ahead: processing can take 2–4 weeks.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Visa required
You need a visa before traveling to Russia. Apply through the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal at kdmid.ru. Processing takes 10–30 days depending on the visa type and your embassy's workload.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Russia. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Russian law, but airlines may enforce 6 months — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa application
You need a confirmed return or onward ticket when applying for the visa and when entering Russia. Immigration officers at Moscow Sheremetyevo and other airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Have a hotel booking or invitation letter (from a Russian host) ready. Immigration may ask for it at the border, especially if you're staying in private accommodation.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Carry evidence of sufficient funds for your stay — around 500–1,000 USD per week is a safe benchmark. Immigration rarely checks this, but it helps if questioned.Recommended
Visa required — no exceptions
UK passport holders cannot enter Russia without a visa. There are no visa-on-arrival, e-visa, or visa waiver programmes. Apply well in advance.
Keep your migration card
When you enter Russia, you'll receive a migration card (a small slip). Keep it with your passport at all times. You must return it when you leave — losing it can cause delays at the border.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your visa online
Go to evisa.kdmid.ru and fill out the application form. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, and accommodation address. After submitting, you'll get a confirmation number and a list of documents to bring to your appointment.
2
Attend your visa appointment
Book an appointment at the Russian Visa Application Centre in London, Edinburgh, or Manchester. Bring your printed application, passport, passport photo, and supporting documents. You'll be fingerprinted and photographed. Processing takes 7–14 working days for standard service, or 3–5 for express (costs more).
3
Collect your visa
Once approved, you'll receive a sticker in your passport. Check the dates and validity period carefully — you must enter and exit within those dates. The visa is usually single or double entry, valid for up to 30 days.
4
Arrive in Russia
At passport control, hand over your passport with the visa sticker. The officer may ask to see your return ticket and accommodation booking. They'll stamp your migration card — keep the smaller slip with your passport; you'll need it when you leave.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing takes 7–14 working days. Express service (3–5 working days) costs extra — around £150–£200. Apply at least 4 weeks before your trip to be safe.
No. UK passport holders must get a visa before travelling. There are no visa-on-arrival facilities at any Russian airport or land border.
A standard single-entry visa costs around £100–£150, depending on processing speed and the visa centre's service fees. Express or double-entry visas cost more. Check the Russian Visa Application Centre website for current fees.
For tourist visas, you need a visa support letter (voucher) from a Russian tour operator or hotel. Many hotels include this in your booking. For business visas, you need an official invitation from a Russian company. The visa centre can provide a tourist voucher for a fee if your hotel doesn't.
Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine (around 2,000–5,000 RUB) and a ban on re-entering Russia for up to 5 years. Extensions are rarely granted. Leave before your visa expires.
Extensions are possible only in exceptional circumstances (e.g., medical emergency). You must apply at the local migration office at least 7 days before your visa expires. It's not guaranteed and costs extra.
Yes. Your hotel or host must register your visa with the local migration office within 7 days of your arrival. If you're staying in multiple places, each accommodation provider should handle this. Keep the registration slip — you may need it when leaving.
