British passport holders need a visa to enter Russia. You must apply through the Russian embassy or consulate before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or eVisa option for UK citizens. Start the process well ahead of your trip, as it involves an invitation and several weeks of processing.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Russian visaYou cannot get a visa on arrival; start the application well in advance.
Apply at the Russian embassy or consulate
A visa is required for UK passport holders. You must apply in person or through a visa centre at a Russian embassy or consulate before travel. The eVisa is not available for UK citizens.Required
Passport validityIf your passport expires sooner, renew it before applying for the visa.
At least 6 months beyond your intended departure from Russia
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you plan to leave Russia. Check your passport's expiry date before applying for the visa.Required
Blank passport pagesThe visa is affixed to a blank page, so it must be clean and unused.
At least 1 blank page for the visa
Your passport must contain at least one blank page for the Russian visa sticker. Ensure no pages are damaged or missing.Required
Visa invitation / support letterWithout this invitation, your visa application will likely be rejected.
Required for most visa types
Most Russian visa applications require an official invitation (visa support) from a Russian host, hotel, or tour operator. This is often arranged by your accommodation or travel agency.Required
Visa application form and photoIncorrect or incomplete forms cause delays.
Complete online and print
Fill out the Russian visa application form online, print it, and bring a recent passport-style photo that meets Russian visa specifications. The form must be signed and dated.Required
Return or onward ticketA one-way ticket may be refused; have a booked departure flight.
Proof of departure from Russia
You must have a confirmed return or onward flight ticket showing your departure from Russia within the visa's validity period. This is often required at visa application and may be checked at immigration.Required
Proof of fundsBorder officials can ask for evidence of financial means.
Sufficient money for your stay
You may need to show proof of sufficient funds for your stay in Russia, such as bank statements or traveler's checks. The exact amount is not fixed but should cover accommodation and living expenses.Recommended
Arrival declarationThe migration card is separate and is given to you upon arrival.
Not required for UK passport holders
No arrival declaration is required for UK citizens entering Russia. You only need to complete the standard migration card, which is usually provided on the flight or at the border. Not required
Start early — this is not a quick process
Between getting the invitation, booking an appointment, and processing time, allow at least 4–6 weeks. The London embassy is busy, and appointments can be scarce. Don't leave it to the last minute.
No eVisa, no visa-on-arrival
UK citizens are not eligible for Russia's eVisa program. The only way to get a visa is through the Russian embassy/consulate. Any website offering an 'e-visa for UK citizens' is a scam.
Registration requirement
If you stay longer than 7 working days, your hotel or host must register your visa. This is mandatory — failing to register can lead to fines and problems when leaving. Always ask for the registration slip.

What happens at the border

1
Get your invitation
Contact your hotel or a Russian visa agency to obtain a tourist invitation. This can take a few days to a couple of weeks, so do this first. Make sure the invitation matches your actual travel dates and passport details.
2
Complete the online application
Fill out the form on the Russian MFA website (visa.kdmid.ru). Double-check every field — especially your passport number and dates. Print the completed form and sign it.
3
Book an appointment at the embassy
Visit the Russian Embassy in London (or the consulate in Edinburgh) website to book an appointment. Slots can fill up weeks in advance, so book as soon as you have your invitation. You must appear in person for biometric data collection.
4
Attend your appointment
Bring your printed application, passport, photo, invitation, insurance, and fee payment. Arrive early — security checks take time. The officer will review your documents, collect biometrics, and give you a receipt with a collection date.
5
Collect your passport
Return to the embassy/consulate on the specified date to collect your passport with the visa sticker. Check the visa details immediately — any errors (name, dates, passport number) must be corrected before you travel.

No. The Russian eVisa program does not include UK citizens. You must apply through the Russian embassy or consulate in person.
Your visa is valid for the specific dates and number of entries stated on it. If your plans change, you'll need to apply for a new visa — the old one cannot be amended. This means paying the fee again and going through the whole process.
Yes, if you stay more than 7 working days. Your hotel or host must register your visa with the local migration office within that period. If you're in a private apartment, the host must do it. Keep the registration slip — you'll need it when you leave.
Generally no. Visas are not extendable for tourism. If you overstay, you'll face fines and possible deportation. If you have a genuine emergency, contact the local migration office immediately.
Border control will refuse entry if your passport has less than 6 months validity from your departure date. Even if you have a valid visa, you won't be allowed in. Check your passport expiry before booking anything.
