British passport holders can visit Ukraine without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This has been the case since 2020 and remains in effect for 2025. You just need a valid passport and a few practical items ready for border control.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport only needs to be valid for the time you plan to stay in Ukraine. Airlines may ask for at least 3 months validity beyond your departure date — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ukraine
Immigration officers at Kyiv Boryspil and Lviv airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave within the 90-day visa-free period.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you are staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host with their address and phone number ready to show.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can ask for evidence of sufficient money for your stay. Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $50–100 per day of your trip.Recommended
Travel warning
The UK Foreign Office currently advises against all travel to Ukraine due to the war with Russia. Check the latest FCDO advice before making any plans. If you decide to go, get specialist insurance and register with the British Embassy.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Ukraine, not from when you leave. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied entry — even if you plan to leave before it expires.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you queue
Have your passport, return ticket (screenshot or printed), and accommodation confirmation ready. At major airports like Kyiv Boryspil or Lviv, the immigration queue can move fast — don't be the person fumbling through their bag.
2
Approach the border officer
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp your entry, and may ask a few questions (purpose of visit, where staying, how long). Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. This stamp is your proof of legal entry — don't lose it.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags) then customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items. You're now free to enter Ukraine.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must leave Ukraine (even for a day) and re-enter, but be aware that border officers may question frequent back-to-back visits. For long-term stays, apply for a temporary residence permit at the State Migration Service in Ukraine.
You must have at least 6 months validity on entry. If your passport expires during your stay, you're still legally in the country until your 90 days are up, but you'll need a valid passport to leave. Contact the British Embassy in Kyiv for an emergency travel document if needed.
For stays under 90 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer (which requires a visa or permit), you must register within 30 days at the local migration office. For short visits, just keep your entry stamp safe.
Yes. British passport holders can enter at any land border crossing. The same visa-free rules apply. Be prepared for longer queues at busy crossings like Medyka (Poland) or Siret (Romania). Have your documents ready.
Overstaying is a violation of immigration law. You may be fined (around 1,700–5,100 UAH, roughly £35–£105), banned from re-entry for up to 3 years, or both. If you realise you've overstayed, contact the State Migration Service immediately to regularise your status.
No. British passport holders do not need a visa for transit through Ukraine, as long as you stay in the international transit zone of the airport and your connecting flight departs within 24 hours. If you need to leave the airport, you'll need a visa or use the visa-free entry rules.
The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Ukraine due to the ongoing war with Russia. Check the latest FCDO travel advice before booking. If you do travel, ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers war zones, and register with the British Embassy in Kyiv.
