What happens at the border

1
Apply for your Cuban visa at the embassy
Contact the Cuban embassy in Accra (or the nearest consulate) to schedule an appointment. Submit your passport, completed application form, photos, and pay the fee. Processing can take a few days to a couple of weeks, so apply well in advance.
2
Book flights and accommodation
Once you have your visa, book your flights to Havana (José Martí International Airport) and arrange your stay. Keep printed confirmations of your return ticket and hotel/hostel booking.
3
Prepare your documents for travel
Pack your passport, visa, flight itinerary, accommodation proof, insurance certificate, and any bank statements in your carry-on. You'll need them at check-in and possibly at immigration.
4
Go through immigration on arrival
At Havana airport, join the 'Foreigners' queue. Present your passport, visa, and any requested documents. The officer will stamp your passport and note your allowed stay. Keep the entry stamp safe — you'll need it when you leave.

Frequently asked questions

No. Ghanaian passport holders are not eligible for visa-on-arrival. You must obtain a Cuban tourist card from the Cuban embassy or consulate before you travel.
Processing times vary, but typically it takes 5–10 working days. It's best to apply at least 3–4 weeks before your planned departure to account for any delays.
The fee is set by the Cuban embassy and can change. Expect to pay around $50–$100 USD equivalent in Ghanaian cedis. Contact the embassy for the exact current fee.
The standard tourist card allows a stay of 30 days. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for an extension at a Cuban immigration office, but it's not guaranteed and you must do it before your 30 days expire.
Cuba requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you're arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Ghana is on that list, so you'll need to show your yellow fever certificate at immigration. Make sure it's up to date.
Cuban immigration may require you to purchase a local health insurance policy on arrival. This can be expensive and inconvenient, so it's better to bring proof of your own international policy that covers Cuba.
Extensions are possible but not automatic. You'd need to visit the immigration office (Oficina de Inmigración) in Havana or other major cities before your 30 days are up. The extension is usually for another 30 days, but approval is at the discretion of the authorities.
