Ghanaian passport holders can enter the Gambia without a visa for tourism or business stays up to 90 days. This policy is in effect for 2026. Bring the required documents, and you'll clear immigration quickly.

Status
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Ghanaian passport needs to be valid for at least the length of your stay in Gambia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.
Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Gambia
Immigration officers at Banjul International Airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.
Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Gambia. Officers may ask where you are staying during the entry interview.
Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have cash, a bank statement, or a credit card showing you can cover your expenses. Gambia is a cash-heavy economy — carry some Gambian dalasi or US dollars for immediate needs.
Recommended
Yellow fever certificate required
You must carry your yellow fever vaccination certificate. Immigration officers routinely check for it, and without it you could be denied entry or forced to get vaccinated at the airport.
Keep a copy of your passport
Make a photocopy of your passport's photo page and entry stamp, or save a photo on your phone. If you lose your passport, this makes replacement at the Ghanaian embassy much easier.
What happens at the border
1
Arrive at Banjul International Airport
You'll land at Banjul International Airport (BJL). Follow signs to 'Immigration' — it's a small airport, so you can't miss it.
2
Queue at the immigration counter
Join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will check your passport validity and stamp you in.
3
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. If asked, show your return ticket (screenshot is fine) and accommodation booking. Answer any questions about your stay length and purpose.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry. Check the stamp says the correct date before walking away. If there's an issue, ask politely at the counter.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to go — no visa or additional paperwork needed.
Enter your arrival date and we'll tell you exactly when you need to leave.

Required for entry
Yellow FeverRequired for travellers arriving from countries with yellow fever transmission, including Ghana.
You can stay up to 90 days per visit. This is the standard visa-free period for Ghanaian passport holders. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for an extension from the Gambia Immigration Department in Banjul.
Extensions are not available under the visa-free arrangement. If you need to stay longer, you must leave the country and re-enter, or apply for a different visa type before travel. Overstaying can result in fines or deportation.
Yes, the Gambia requires proof of yellow fever vaccination if you're arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. Ghana is considered a risk country, so you'll need to show your yellow fever certificate at immigration. Carry it with your passport.
You will likely be denied entry. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling — it's not worth the risk.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism and business visits only. If you plan to work, study, or volunteer, you must apply for the appropriate visa or permit from the Gambian embassy before you travel.
Yes, there is a departure tax of about 500 GMD (around $10 USD) for international flights. This is usually included in your airline ticket, but check with your airline. If not, you'll pay at the airport in cash (Gambian dalasi or US dollars).
The local currency is the Gambian dalasi (GMD). US dollars are widely accepted at hotels and larger shops, but you'll get better rates using dalasi. Bring some cash in small denominations for taxis and markets. ATMs are available in Banjul and Serrekunda.
