Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Rwanda
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity remaining from the day you leave Rwanda. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding. Rwanda does not make exceptions for shorter validity.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Rwanda
Immigration officers at Kigali International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket before they stamp you in. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready. This applies even for visa-free entries.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation letter
Officers may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number works. Booking a refundable hotel for the first night covers you.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Rwanda does not publish a fixed minimum amount, but officers expect to see cash, a credit card, or a bank statement covering your stay. Have at least $200–$300 USD equivalent available — either in cash or accessible from your phone.Recommended
Yellow fever certificate required
Rwanda requires a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, including Ghana. Without it, you may be denied entry or forced to get vaccinated at the airport (if available). Get the shot at least 10 days before travel.
Keep a copy of your documents
Save digital copies of your passport, return ticket, hotel booking, and insurance on your phone or in cloud storage. If you lose your passport, these copies make replacement much faster.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months beyond entry date) and ensure you have at least one blank page. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Download or print your booking confirmations and travel insurance policy.
2
Arrive at Kigali International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Arrivals'. Join the queue for foreign passport holders. Have your passport, boarding pass, and any supporting documents ready.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport to the immigration officer. They may ask about the purpose of your visit, how long you plan to stay, and where you are staying. Answer clearly and honestly.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a free entry permit valid for up to 90 days. No fee is charged. The process usually takes 2–5 minutes.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs (usually a green channel for most tourists). Exit into the arrivals hall.
