Greek passport holders can travel to Spain visa-free for tourism or business stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. No visa is needed for 2026, but you must meet standard Schengen entry requirements. This page covers exactly what you need to show at the border.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Greek passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Spain. Since you are entering the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all 29 Schengen countries — not just Spain.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen zone
Immigration officers at Spanish airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen area within 90 days. Budget airlines boarding in Greece may also check this before letting you fly.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from a host ready. Spanish border officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €100 per day of your stay. Officers rarely check this for Greek passport holders, but it helps if asked.Recommended
6-month passport validity is strictly enforced
Spanish border officers check your passport's expiry date against your entry date. If it's less than 6 months away, you can be refused entry. Renew early.
ETIAS coming soon
Starting in 2026, Greek citizens will need to register with ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) before traveling to Spain. It's a quick online application costing €7, valid for 3 years. Keep an eye on official EU announcements for the exact launch date.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Spanish border control
At any Spanish airport (Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, etc.) or land border, join the 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport ready.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport. The officer will check your photo, validity, and may scan it. They may ask a few questions about your trip.
3
Answer questions if asked
Common questions: 'How long are you staying?', 'Where are you staying?', 'What's the purpose of your visit?' Answer briefly and honestly. Have your accommodation address and return ticket details handy.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. This stamp starts your 90-day Schengen clock. Check the stamp before walking away.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After clearing passport control, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags), then exit through customs. No further immigration steps.

Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. The clock starts the day you enter the Schengen area. Use the EU's short-stay calculator to track your days.
No. The visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a national visa (e.g., student, work) before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can result in fines or a re-entry ban.
You may be denied entry. Spanish border officers strictly enforce the 6-month validity rule. Renew your passport before traveling.
Yes. You need proof that you will leave the Schengen area before your 90 days are up. A bus, train, or ferry ticket out works. A one-way flight into Spain without onward plans may raise questions.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may be fined, deported, and banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 3 years. Always leave before day 90.
Not officially required for visa-free entry, but it's strongly recommended. If you need medical care, costs can be high. A basic policy covering medical emergencies and repatriation is cheap and smart.
