Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Bhutan e-Permit
Apply for a Bhutan e-Permit at bhutan.travel/e-permit before you travel. This is mandatory for all tourists — you cannot get a visa on arrival. Processing takes 3-5 working days, and you need a confirmed tour booking with a licensed Bhutanese tour operator first.Apply for e-PermitRequired
Valid passport
Hong Kong SAR passport
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Bhutan. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound travel proof
Immigration officers at Paro Airport ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket before they stamp you in. Have your flight booking printed or saved on your phone — they check this every time.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel or tour booking
Bhutan requires all tourists to book through a licensed tour operator who arranges your hotels. Your tour confirmation serves as proof of accommodation — have a copy ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Daily tariff payment
Bhutan's tourism policy includes a mandatory daily tariff (around $200-$250 USD per person per night) that covers accommodation, meals, guide, and transport. Your tour operator handles this — just carry a credit card or cash for incidentals.Recommended
Sustainable Development Fee is non-refundable
The SDF of USD 100 per night is paid upfront and is not refunded if you leave early or cancel. Plan your itinerary carefully before paying.
Paro Airport is small — expect a quick process
Paro International Airport has only a few flights daily. Immigration queues are short. Still, have your documents ready to avoid delays.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa through a tour operator or directly
Most travellers go through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator who handles the eVisa application. If you're booking independently, use the official Bhutan eVisa portal. You'll need a scanned passport bio page and a passport photo. Processing takes 3-5 working days.
2
Pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)
The SDF is USD 100 per person per night (2026 rate). This is paid as part of the visa process. Exemptions apply for Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian nationals — not for Hong Kong passport holders.
3
Receive eVisa approval
Once approved, you'll get a PDF via email. Print it and keep a digital copy on your phone. The eVisa is linked to your passport number — no sticker in the passport.
4
Arrive at Paro International Airport
Paro is the only international airport. At immigration, present your passport, eVisa approval, and return ticket. They'll stamp you in. The queue is usually short — 10-15 minutes.

The eVisa itself costs USD 40. On top of that, you must pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of USD 100 per person per night. So for a 5-night trip, the total visa + SDF cost is USD 540.
Extensions are not available for eVisa holders. You must leave by the date on your approved visa. If you need a longer stay, you'd need to apply for a different visa type before travel.
Rejections are rare but can happen if your passport has less than 6 months validity, or if your tour operator booking isn't confirmed. You'll get a refund of the visa fee minus a processing charge. Reapply with corrected documents.
For independent travellers, yes — most eVisa applications require a booking with a licensed Bhutanese tour operator. If you're visiting friends or family, you can apply directly through the eVisa portal with a letter of invitation.
Your passport (valid 6+ months), printed eVisa approval, and return ticket. They may also ask for your first night hotel confirmation. Keep everything in your hand luggage.
