Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Croatian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Bulgaria. Bulgaria does not enforce the 6-month validity rule for EU nationals — just make sure it doesn't expire before you leave.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport and land borders routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight, bus, or train booking out of Bulgaria ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter from your host. Border officers rarely ask for it for EU citizens, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. Bulgaria does not publish a fixed minimum amount, but around 50 BGN (~25 EUR) per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev (BGN)
The local currency is the Bulgarian Lev, not the Euro. ATMs are widely available in cities. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants, but carry some cash for smaller shops and rural areas.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Border officers will check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's close, renew before you go.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you travel, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Save screenshots on your phone.
2
Arrive at Bulgarian border
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the queue for non-EU/EEA passports. Have your passport and documents ready.
3
Present documents to border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim (if flying) and then customs. You're free to enter Bulgaria.
