Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Panama. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Panamanian law, but some airlines may ask for 6 months — check with your carrier before check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Panama
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at Tocumen International Airport. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight booking ready — they may scan the barcode at the counter.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Panama doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but having at least $500 USD in cash, a credit card, or a bank statement visible on your phone covers you. I've never been asked, but a few travellers report being quizzed on this.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity before boarding. If you have less than 6 months left, you won't be allowed to fly. Don't risk it.
No visa, but still need documents
Even though you don't need a visa, immigration can still ask for proof of return ticket and accommodation. Have them ready on your phone.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before travel
Print or save digital copies of your passport, return ticket, hotel booking, and insurance. Keep them in a folder on your phone for quick access.
2
Arrive at Panama City's Tocumen International Airport (PTY)
After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). Join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport and return ticket ready.
3
Present documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel address. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 90-day entry.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to enter Panama.
