Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your entry date into Timor-Leste. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Timor-Leste
Immigration officers at Presidente Nicolau dos Santos Lobato International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a clear digital version on your phone ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
You may be asked where you're staying during your visit. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and contact number covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Officers occasionally ask for evidence of sufficient funds. Carry a bank statement or credit card showing at least $500 USD for your stay.Recommended
No visa needed — but be prepared
You don't need to apply for anything before you go. Just make sure your passport is valid for 6+ months and you have a return ticket. Immigration at Dili airport is straightforward and fast.
ATMs and cash
ATMs in Timor-Leste are scarce and often out of service. Bring enough US dollars in cash to cover your entire stay. Most places outside Dili only accept cash.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Presidente Nicolau dos Santos Lobato International Airport (DIL)
This is the main international gateway. After landing, follow signs to Immigration. There's usually one queue for all foreigners. Have your passport and return ticket ready.
2
Present documents and get stamped in
Hand over your passport and return ticket. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp you in, and you're free to go. No forms to fill, no fee to pay. The whole process takes 5–10 minutes.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel and walk through customs. There's no duty-free or currency exchange before customs — you can change money at the airport exit or in Dili.
