Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Hungarian passport only needs to be valid for the time you plan to stay in Bulgaria. Airlines sometimes ask for 3 months beyond your departure date — check with your carrier before you fly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they rarely accept verbal promises.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a signed letter from a friend with their address covers you.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Bulgaria doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but carrying around €50–€100 per day in cash or a card statement with available credit works. I've never been asked, but a friend was once quizzed on how he'd pay for a month-long trip.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Bulgaria requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines often check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you travel.
Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev (BGN)
The local currency is the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). Euros are widely accepted in tourist areas but you'll get better rates using local currency. ATMs are common in cities.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you fly, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), print or save your return ticket, hotel booking, and insurance. Have them easily accessible on your phone or in a folder.
2
Arrive at Bulgarian border control
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the 'Non-EU' queue. Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp before walking away — ensure the date is correct. Keep the stamp visible for your entire stay.
4
Exit before 90 days
Count your days carefully. Overstaying even by one day can result in a fine or a ban. Set a reminder on your phone a week before your 90th day.
