Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Hungarian passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Estonia. Estonia is part of the Schengen zone — your 90-day visa-free allowance applies across all 27 Schengen countries, not just Estonia.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Tallinn Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines check this before boarding too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or an invitation letter from your host ready. Officers ask for it more often at land borders than at the airport.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry at least €100 per day of your stay in cash or on a card you can show. Officers rarely check this for Hungarian passport holders, but they have the right to ask.Recommended
Schengen Area rules apply
Estonia is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all Schengen countries combined. A trip to France or Germany uses the same 90-day allowance.
EU citizen rights
As a Hungarian citizen, you have the right to enter, live, and work in Estonia under EU freedom of movement rules. The 90-day limit only applies to visa-free tourism/business stays — if you plan to work or study, you can apply for a residence permit without leaving.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Tallinn Airport or border crossing
Most travellers fly into Tallinn Airport (TLL). If arriving by land from Latvia, you'll cross at a Schengen internal border — usually no checks, but random spot checks happen.
2
Join the EU/EEA queue
At passport control, look for the 'EU/EEA' lane. Hungarian passport holders use this lane. Have your passport ready, and if asked, state the purpose and duration of your visit.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
The officer will scan your passport and may ask: 'How long are you staying?', 'Where are you staying?', 'What's the purpose of your visit?'. Answer briefly and honestly. They rarely ask for supporting documents for EU citizens.
4
Receive entry stamp and proceed
You'll get an entry stamp in your passport (unless using automated e-gates). That's it — you're in. Collect your luggage and exit.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen Area rule. The 90-day clock resets after you leave the Schengen Zone for 90 consecutive days.
No. The 90-day visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, or short-term study. If you want to work for an Estonian employer, you need a work permit or a D-visa. Remote work for a non-Estonian company is generally allowed during your visa-free stay.
If you stay longer than 90 days, you must register your residence with the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) within 5 working days of arrival. For stays under 90 days, no registration is needed.
You must have a valid passport for the entire duration of your stay. If it expires, contact the Hungarian embassy in Tallinn for an emergency passport. You cannot extend your stay based on an expired passport.
Yes. As an EU citizen, you can enter Estonia using your valid Hungarian national ID card. No passport is required for travel within the Schengen Area. However, a passport is still recommended for travel outside the EU.
No visa is needed at all — Hungarian passport holders get visa-free access to Estonia. There is no visa-on-arrival process because you don't need a visa.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may be fined, banned from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 5 years, or both. The Estonian Police and Border Guard Board handles enforcement. If you need to stay longer, apply for a residence permit before your 90 days expire.
