Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Italy
Your Hungarian passport needs to be valid for the whole time you're in Italy. Schengen rules do not require 6 months of remaining validity — just that the passport is valid on the day you leave. Airlines sometimes ask for 6 months anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Italian airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. A bus or train ticket to a non-Schengen country works. Budget airlines check this before boarding too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a signed declaration of hospitality (dichiarazione di ospitalità) from your host ready. Border officers rarely ask for it, but when they do, they want a printed copy or a clear email on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Italian law says you need about €50 per person per day for the first 5 days, then €25 per day after that. A bank statement, credit card, or cash works. Officers almost never check this for EU citizens, but carry a card just in case.Recommended
Schengen Area rules apply
Your 90-day allowance covers all 27 Schengen countries combined, not just Italy. A trip to France or Spain counts toward the same 90-day limit.
Passport validity is critical
Airlines may deny boarding if your passport has less than 6 months validity, even if Italy lets you in. Check your passport's expiry date before booking.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Italian border control
At any Italian airport (Rome FCO, Milan MXP, Venice VCE, etc.), join the 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport ready. The officer will scan it, check your face, and stamp you in. No forms to fill.
2
Present your documents if asked
The officer may ask for your return ticket or accommodation booking. Have them easily accessible on your phone or printed. Answer questions clearly — they're usually routine.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp before leaving the counter. If you're staying longer than 90 days, you need a visa — this stamp won't cover that.

Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. The clock resets after you leave the Schengen Area for 90 days. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
You need a long-stay visa (type D) or a residence permit. Apply at the Italian embassy in Budapest before you travel. Options include work, study, or family reunification visas.
Technically, you might be allowed, but airlines and border guards often enforce the 6-month rule. It's safer to renew your passport before traveling.
Not usually for Hungarian passport holders, but immigration can ask. Have a credit card or bank statement ready if you're worried. A few hundred euros in cash is a good backup.
No, but it's strongly recommended. Public healthcare is available to EU citizens with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), but it doesn't cover private hospitals or repatriation. Private insurance fills those gaps.
You risk a fine (typically €100–€500) and a possible entry ban for up to 3 years. The Schengen Information System tracks entries and exits. Don't risk it.
