Hungarian passport holders can enter Slovenia without a visa for short stays. Since both countries are in the Schengen Area, you can travel freely within the zone for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies to tourism, business, or family visits in 2026.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay in Slovenia
Your Hungarian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Slovenia. Since you're entering the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries, not just Slovenia.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Ljubljana Airport or land borders routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive by land from Croatia or Austria. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a friend in Slovenia works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Slovenia rarely checks funds for EU passport holders, but carry a bank card or cash equivalent to at least €100 per day of your stay. I've never been asked, but better safe than stuck at the border.Recommended
Schengen zone rules apply
Slovenia is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day allowance covers all Schengen countries combined, not just Slovenia. Keep track of your days using the Schengen calculator.
Border checks may still happen
Even though there are no permanent border controls within Schengen, Slovenia may temporarily reinstate checks at its borders with Croatia, Austria, or Italy. Always carry your passport when crossing borders.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the border
At Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport or any land border, join the queue for non-Schengen passports (even though you're visa-free). Have your passport ready.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask about the purpose of your visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. This stamp proves you entered legally.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, pick up your bags from the carousel and walk through the green 'nothing to declare' channel if you have no goods to declare.
