Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Apply for a visa before travel
You need a visa to enter Turkmenistan. Apply through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal at least 2 weeks before your trip. The visa letter (invitation) from a Turkmen host or tour operator is mandatory — most travellers book a guided tour to get this.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your Hungarian passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Turkmenistan. Carry a photocopy of the bio page separately from the passport itself.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Turkmenistan
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy of your flight itinerary ready — they may check it before issuing your entry stamp.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
You need to show a hotel reservation or a letter from your Turkmen host confirming where you'll stay. The visa letter from your tour operator usually covers this — keep a printed copy.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry at least $100 USD per day in cash or a credit card statement. Turkmenistan has limited ATM access and card acceptance is rare outside major hotels.Recommended
Visa required — no exceptions
Hungarian passport holders cannot enter Turkmenistan without a pre-arranged visa. There is no visa-on-arrival or e-visa option. Start the process at least 6 weeks before your trip.
Letter of invitation is key
Your LOI must be issued by the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan. Your travel agency or host handles this. Without it, your visa application will be rejected.

What happens at the border

1
Get a letter of invitation
Contact a travel agency in Turkmenistan or your host there. They will apply to the State Migration Service for your LOI. This can take 2–4 weeks.
2
Submit visa application
Take your passport, completed application form, LOI, passport photos, and fee to the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Budapest (or the nearest embassy if you're not in Hungary). Processing takes 10–15 working days.
3
Collect your visa
Once approved, the embassy will stamp the visa into your passport. Check the validity dates — they are often strict.
4
Arrive at Ashgabat International Airport
Go through immigration. Have your passport with visa, return ticket, and accommodation address ready. The officer may ask a few questions — answer clearly.
