Hungarian passport holders can enter Ukraine without a visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This has been the case since 2017, and nothing has changed for 2026. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Ukraine. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Ukrainian law, but airlines may enforce a 3-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ukraine
Border officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at Kyiv Boryspil and Lviv airports. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound booking ready — they check this before letting you through passport control.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and phone number covers this. Keep a copy on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can request proof you have enough money for your stay — roughly $50 per day is the informal benchmark. A bank statement or credit card with a decent limit usually satisfies them.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Ukraine. If it expires sooner, you will be denied boarding or entry. No exceptions.
Keep a digital copy of your documents
Save photos of your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation on your phone. If you lose your passport, these copies will help at your embassy.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Ukrainian border
At any land border crossing or airport (Kyiv Boryspil, Lviv, Odesa), join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport and any supporting documents ready.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport. The officer will check your validity, look for a blank page, and may ask about your trip purpose and length of stay.
3
Answer questions if asked
Common questions: 'How long are you staying?', 'Where are you staying?', 'Do you have a return ticket?'. Answer honestly and briefly.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay period. Check the stamp before walking away.
5
Collect your belongings and proceed
After the stamp, you're free to enter. No additional forms or fees required for Hungarian passport holders.

Frequently asked questions

No. Hungarian passport holders can enter Ukraine visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies to tourism, business, and family visits.
No. The visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you must apply for a temporary residence permit at a Ukrainian immigration office before your 90 days expire. This requires a valid reason (work, study, family reunification) and supporting documents.
You will likely be denied entry. Ukrainian border guards strictly enforce the 6-month validity rule. Renew your passport before traveling.
Not required for Hungarian passport holders. However, if you look like you might overstay or have no means of support, an officer could ask. Having a credit card or some cash (around €50 per day) is wise.
No, but it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Ukraine can be high, and public hospitals may require upfront payment. A basic travel insurance policy covering medical evacuation costs around €20–30 for a week.
Yes. All land border crossings are open for Hungarian passport holders. The same visa-free rules apply. Expect longer queues at popular crossings (e.g., Krakowiec-Korczowa on the Polish border) during peak season.
Overstaying can result in a fine (around 1,700–8,500 UAH, roughly €40–200), a ban from re-entering Ukraine for up to 3 years, or both. Always track your days carefully.
