What happens at the border

1
Gather your documents
Scan your passport bio page, prepare a recent passport-style photo (digital), and collect evidence of funds (bank statements, pay slips) and ties to Indonesia (employment letter, property ownership).
2
Apply online via ImmiAccount
Go to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website, create an ImmiAccount, and fill out the Visitor visa (subclass 600) application. Upload all documents and pay the AUD 190 fee.
3

Transiting through Australia

Transit visa required

Indonesian passport holders transiting through Australia must hold a valid visa, even if staying airside. The Transit visa (subclass 771) is required unless you qualify for a transit without visa (TWOV) under specific conditions.

Exceptions & conditions
  • Holders of a valid Australian visa (e.g., visitor, student, work) do not need a separate transit visa.
  • Citizens of certain countries may be eligible for TWOV if they have a confirmed onward ticket and stay within the airport transit area for less than 8 hours, but Indonesia is not currently on the list.

Frequently asked questions

Typically up to 3 months per visit, but the exact duration is decided by the visa officer and stated in your grant letter. It can be shorter or longer depending on your circumstances.
No. The Visitor visa (subclass 600) does not allow you to work. You can study for up to 3 months, but employment is strictly prohibited.
Processing times vary, but for Indonesian applicants, it usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. It can be longer if your application is incomplete or if biometrics are required. Check the current processing times on the Home Affairs website.
No, this visa type is not extendable. You must leave Australia before your visa expires and apply for a new visa if you wish to return. Plan your stay carefully.
Yes, it's a key part of the application. You need to show you have enough money to cover your stay — typically bank statements for the last 3-6 months. There's no fixed amount, but a few thousand AUD is a good benchmark.
You'll receive a refusal letter explaining why. You can appeal to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) within 21 days, or reapply with additional evidence. The application fee is not refunded.
No. Australia issues electronic visas linked to your passport number. Your visa grant notification is proof — you don't need a physical label, though you can request one for a fee if you really want it.
