Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Kazakhstan
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from the day you leave Kazakhstan. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, they may deny boarding. Immigration officers in Almaty and Nur-Sultan also enforce this strictly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Kazakhstan
Immigration at Almaty and Nur-Sultan airports routinely asks for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they want to see you leave within the 30-day visa-free window. A bus or train ticket to a neighboring country also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Kazakhstan. Immigration officers sometimes ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A simple Booking.com confirmation works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least 500 USD equivalent. Officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, they want to see you can cover accommodation and expenses for 30 days.Recommended
Overstaying is costly
The 30-day visa-free period is not extendable. Overstaying even by a day can result in fines (10,000–50,000 KZT) and a possible entry ban. Set a reminder to leave on time.
Keep your documents digital
Save screenshots of your return ticket, accommodation booking, and passport info page on your phone. Immigration may ask to see them, and having them handy speeds things up.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of both on your phone. Consider getting travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Arrive at a Kazakh airport
You'll land at Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport (NQZ) in Astana or Almaty International Airport (ALA). Follow signs to 'Passport Control' or 'Foreigners'.
3
Queue at immigration
Join the line for foreign passports. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will check your passport validity, may ask about your stay, and might request your return ticket or accommodation proof.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (30 days). Count 30 days from that stamp — overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You're now free to enter Kazakhstan.
