Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Peru. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Peruvian law, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Peru
Immigration officers at Lima Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they'll check the date matches your intended stay.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement, credit card, or cash equivalent to at least $1,000 USD for your trip. Immigration may ask to see it if you look underfunded.Recommended
Altitude sickness is real
If heading to Cusco (3,400m) or Machu Picchu, altitude sickness is common. Acclimatize for 1–2 days in Cusco before hiking. Consider medication like acetazolamide. Symptoms include headache, nausea, and shortness of breath. Severe cases can be dangerous.
Overstay fines add up fast
Fine is about $10 USD per day, capped at $500 USD. Pay at any Migraciones office before leaving. Unpaid fines can lead to a re-entry ban.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before flying
At check-in in Jakarta or Bali, the airline will ask for your passport and return ticket. Have both ready. If transiting through hubs like Singapore or Dubai, no transit visa is needed if you stay airside.
2
Fill out digital arrival form if required
Peru may require an online arrival declaration (Andean Migration Card). Check the official Migraciones website before your trip. If required, complete it up to 48 hours before arrival and save the QR code.
3
Go through immigration at Lima or Cusco
At the counter, hand over your passport and return ticket. The officer may ask your length of stay and accommodation. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with up to 180 days. The process takes 2–5 minutes if prepared.
4
Collect bags and exit
After immigration, grab your luggage from the carousel and walk through customs. Use the green channel (nothing to declare) unless carrying expensive electronics or large amounts of cash.
