Irish passport holders need an eVisa to enter Libya in 2026. You must apply online before you travel — there are no visa-on-arrival options for Irish citizens. Plan ahead, as processing can take several weeks.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Required
Apply for a Libyan eVisa through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal at mfa.gov.ly. Processing takes several weeks and requires a scanned passport, photo, and supporting documents. Pay the fee online and print the approval letter to present at the border.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Required
Your Irish passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay in Libya. Airlines enforce this strictly at check-in, and Libyan immigration will deny entry if your passport expires sooner.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required
Libyan immigration requires proof of a return or onward flight out of the country. Airlines check this before boarding, so have your ticket printed or saved on your phone.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Carry a hotel booking confirmation or an invitation letter from your host in Libya. Immigration officers may ask for it, especially if you're arriving without a pre-arranged tour or business contact.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Have bank statements or cash showing you can cover your stay — around $100 USD per day is a safe benchmark. Officers rarely ask, but it helps if you're questioned about your itinerary.Recommended
Travel insurance is strongly recommended
Libya's healthcare system is limited and private hospitals can charge hundreds of dollars per day. Travel insurance covers medical evacuation, which may be necessary in serious cases.
eVisa processing can be slow
Apply at least 4 weeks before you travel. The official portal may have intermittent issues, so check your application status regularly.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Libyan eVisa website and fill out the application. You'll need to upload a digital passport photo and a copy of your passport bio page. Pay the fee online. Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks, so apply well before your trip.
2
Gather your travel documents
Once your eVisa is approved, print a copy. Also print or save your return ticket, hotel booking, and insurance certificate. Keep everything together in a folder or on your phone for quick access.
3
Arrive at the airport in Libya
At Tripoli Mitiga Airport or Benghazi Airport, proceed to immigration. Present your passport, eVisa printout, and return ticket. The officer may ask a few questions about your stay. Answer clearly and honestly.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. There may be a customs check — declare any large amounts of cash or restricted items. Then you're free to leave the airport.
