Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your Irish passport must be valid for the duration of your stay in Nicaragua. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers at Managua Airport routinely ask for a printed or digital onward ticket showing you leave Nicaragua within 90 days. Airlines also enforce this before boarding.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Officers occasionally ask for an address where you will stay, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a bank statement or enough cash to cover your stay. Immigration may ask how you plan to support yourself — $50–$100 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Nicaragua requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines check this before you board. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be turned away — no exceptions.
No visa needed, but be prepared
You don't need a visa, but immigration can still deny entry if you can't show a return ticket or accommodation. Keep digital copies of everything on your phone.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Managua International Airport
Most Irish travellers fly into Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA) in Managua. After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration).
2
Queue at immigration counter
Join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport, return ticket (printed or on phone), and accommodation booking ready. The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry.
3
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. You may be asked to declare goods at customs. Keep your passport handy for any random checks.
4
Exit the arrivals hall
Once through customs, you're free to leave. Taxis and shuttles are available outside. Keep your entry stamp safe — you'll need it when you leave.
