Irish passport holders can visit Norway visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This policy has been in place for 2026 and remains unchanged. You don't need to apply for anything before you travel, but you must meet entry requirements at the border.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay in Norway
Your Irish passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your trip. Norway follows Schengen rules — you can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen zone, not just Norway.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Oslo Gardermoen and other Norwegian airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host with their address and contact details. Border officers occasionally ask for this, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient means for your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your expenses — around 500 NOK per day is a safe benchmark. I've never been asked for this entering Norway, but it's in the rulebook.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Norway is part of the Schengen area. Your 90-day visa-free limit counts across all 27 Schengen countries, not just Norway. Keep track of your days using the Schengen calculator.
Border checks may be strict
Norwegian immigration officers can ask for proof of funds, accommodation, and onward travel. Have digital copies of everything on your phone. If you can't show them, you may be refused entry.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at passport control
At Oslo Gardermoen or any other Norwegian airport, follow signs to 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport. The officer will check your photo, validity, and may ask about your trip purpose and length of stay. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Answer entry questions
Typical questions: 'How long are you staying?', 'Where are you staying?', 'What's the purpose of your visit?'. Have your accommodation address and return ticket details ready.
4
Get your entry stamp
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and the number of days allowed. Check the stamp before walking away.

Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The clock resets once you leave the Schengen area for 90 consecutive days. Overstaying can result in fines or a re-entry ban.
Extensions are not granted for tourism. If you need to stay longer for work, study, or family reunification, you must apply for a residence permit before your 90 days expire.
You risk a fine, deportation, and a re-entry ban to the entire Schengen area. The Norwegian Police Immigration Unit (PU) handles overstay cases. Always leave before day 90.
Yes. Immigration may ask for proof of onward travel regardless of mode. A ferry booking or a bus ticket out of Norway counts as an onward ticket.
No, but it's strongly recommended. Norway is not in the EU, so your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) may not cover all costs. Private travel insurance is cheap and covers medical emergencies.
Renew your passport before traveling. Damaged passports (torn pages, water damage, detached cover) can be refused at the border. A new Irish passport takes 5-10 working days via Passport Online.
