Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay

Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Rwanda
Immigration officers at Kigali Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot of your booking ready — they will check the date matches your visa validity.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Rwanda. Immigration may ask for it during the visa-on-arrival process — having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card ready to show you have sufficient funds for your trip. Immigration officers rarely ask for it, but it is better to have it on hand.Recommended
Visa on arrival is straightforward
No prior application needed — just show up with your passport, return ticket, and USD 50. The process at Kigali Airport is efficient and usually takes under 20 minutes.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. If it's close to expiry, renew before you travel. No exceptions.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kigali International Airport (or land border)
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. At land borders, go directly to the immigration office. There's no separate queue for visa-on-arrival — you'll join the main immigration line.
2
Present documents at the counter
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (given on the plane or at the border), and your return ticket and accommodation confirmation if asked. The officer will check your passport validity and blank page.
3
Pay the visa fee
Pay USD 50 (single entry) in cash or by credit/debit card. Card payments are accepted but cash is faster. Keep the receipt.
4
Receive visa sticker and get stamped in
The officer will affix a visa sticker to a blank page, stamp it, and return your passport. You're now cleared to enter. The whole process usually takes 10–20 minutes.

USD 50 for a single-entry visa valid for up to 30 days. If you need a multiple-entry visa (e.g., for trips to neighbouring countries), it's USD 70 for 90 days. Both are paid at the counter in cash (USD) or by card.
Yes — you can extend your 30-day visa once for an additional 30 days. Visit the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration in Kigali (KG 7 Ave, near the airport). The extension costs about USD 50 and takes 1–2 working days.
Yes — if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (including Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, etc.), you must show a yellow fever vaccination certificate. If you're flying directly from Ireland, it's not required, but carry your certificate anyway — some airlines check.
You will be denied a visa on arrival and refused entry. Renew your passport before travelling. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced.
Yes — Rwanda offers an e-visa (apply at migov.gov.rw). It costs the same (USD 50) and takes about 3 working days to process. Some travellers prefer it to avoid queueing at the airport. You'll still need the same documents.
No — you join the main immigration queue. The officer will process your visa on arrival at the same counter. It's usually quick (10–20 minutes), but can be longer during peak hours (evening arrivals).
