Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival at Zimbabwe airports and land borders
Irish passport holders can get a single-entry visa on arrival at Harare, Bulawayo, and Victoria Falls airports for $30 USD. Have the exact cash ready — the counters rarely have change. You can also apply for an eVisa in advance at www.evisa.gov.zw to skip the queue.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Zimbabwe does not enforce the 6-month validity rule — just needs to cover your stay. Airlines at Dublin may still ask for 6 months, so check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Harare and Victoria Falls routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or the booking confirmation on your phone. Overland exit plans (e.g., bus to Zambia) also count — just show the booking.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host. Immigration rarely checks it, but budget airlines flying into Zimbabwe sometimes ask at check-in. A simple Booking.com confirmation works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $500 USD. Officers almost never ask for it, but if you look like you're working or staying long-term, they might. Cash in USD is widely accepted in Zimbabwe.Recommended
Cash only for visa fee
The visa on arrival fee must be paid in cash (USD). Cards are not accepted. Bring small bills — $20s and $10s — to avoid change issues.
Visa is not extendable
The visa on arrival is valid for up to 30 days and cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a different visa type before you travel or leave and re-enter.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport
You'll land at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare or Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport in Bulawayo. Follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'.
2
Fill out the visa application form
You'll get a small form to fill out on the spot. It asks for basic info: name, passport number, flight details, and where you're staying. Have your accommodation address ready.
3
Present your documents
Hand over your passport, completed form, return ticket (show on your phone), and accommodation booking. The officer will check everything.
4
Pay the visa fee
Pay in cash (USD). The fee is around $30 for a single-entry tourist visa valid for up to 30 days. Keep the receipt.
5
Receive your visa sticker
The officer will stamp a visa sticker into your passport. Check that the dates are correct before you walk away.
6
Proceed to baggage claim and customs
After immigration, collect your bags and go through customs. Have your passport and visa ready for inspection again if asked.

Frequently asked questions

The standard single-entry tourist visa costs $30 USD for up to 30 days. Double-entry or longer stays may cost up to $75 USD. Pay in cash — USD is preferred. Cards are not accepted.
No, the visa on arrival is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a different visa type before you travel or leave and re-enter.
If you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (or transiting through one), you'll need a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Ireland is not a risk country, so if you fly direct from Ireland, you don't need it. But if you've been in a risk area recently, get the vaccine.
You'll be denied entry. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before you travel.
Yes, but it's less predictable. Major land border crossings like Beitbridge (from South Africa) and Victoria Falls (from Zambia) usually offer visa on arrival for Irish passport holders. Always carry cash in USD.
Digital copies (screenshots, emails) are generally accepted for return tickets and accommodation. But for the visa fee, you need cash — no digital payment.
Usually 15–30 minutes, but it can take longer during peak arrival times (multiple flights landing at once). Be patient and have your documents ready.
