Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least the full 90 days you plan to stay in Hong Kong. Airlines may ask for 6 months validity — check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Hong Kong
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this at the counter before you get your entry stamp.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you can support yourself during your stay. No fixed amount is published, but around 3,000 HKD per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Hong Kong immigration counts the 6-month validity from your date of entry, not your departure. If your passport expires within 6 months of landing, you will be denied entry. Check your passport now.
No visa needed, but be prepared
While there's no visa to apply for, immigration officers can still ask for proof of onward travel and accommodation. Have digital copies ready on your phone to avoid delays.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Hong Kong International Airport
You'll land at HKG. Follow signs for 'Arrivals' and then 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for Hong Kong residents and visitors. Join the 'Visitors' queue.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Have them ready. They'll scan your passport, take a photo, and stamp you in.
3
Collect your baggage and exit
After clearing immigration, head to the baggage claim carousels. Then proceed through Customs (usually green channel if nothing to declare). You're in Hong Kong.
