Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Japan
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Japan
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai often ask for a return or onward ticket. Enforcement varies by officer and airline — have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, you need a specific place to show.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Have a bank statement or enough cash/credit to cover your stay. There is no fixed amount, but showing at least ¥50,000–¥100,000 for a short trip keeps things smooth.Recommended

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is strictly 90 days and cannot be extended for tourism. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Japan (e.g., a short trip to South Korea or Taiwan) and re-enter. Immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined, detained, and possibly banned from re-entering Japan for years. Even a few days can cause problems. Set a reminder to leave before day 90.
If you're transiting through a Japanese airport and staying airside (not passing immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you want to leave the airport during a layover, you'll need to qualify for visa-free entry (Israeli passport holders do) and meet the same requirements (passport validity, onward ticket).
No. The visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, or short-term study (e.g., a language course under 90 days). You cannot take paid employment. For work or longer study, you need the appropriate visa.
No, it's not required by law. But it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Japan are high — a hospital stay can easily cost ¥100,000 per day. A good travel insurance policy covering medical evacuation is worth it.
Report it immediately to the nearest police station and get a police report. Then contact the Israeli embassy in Tokyo (3-5-3 Nibancho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 102-0084, phone: +81-3-3264-0911) for an emergency travel document. You'll need the police report and a passport photo.
No. For stays under 90 days, there's no registration requirement. The immigration officer will stamp your passport with a landing permission sticker. That's it.
